slayeroffice - web experiments gone horribly awry

03.01.2005 - Old and Grey

For some time now I've been fretting a bit over what to do with some of the content on slayeroffice that I don't consider to be quite up to par. I've got code here that dates back to the internet boom, and we all know what code looked like back in those days. I'm ashamed to admit I have code from 2003 that looks like it was written then.

My concern is this - lots of people are looking at my code now and learning from it. I think thats awesome, but the last thing I want is someone learning from something I learned from five or six years ago (or even last year in some cases), because they arent learning anything other than my pre-standards bad habbits. There is a lot of stuff here that doesn't degrade nicely, or isn't accessible, or only works in MSIE or doesn't seperate the behavior layer or a combination of all these evils.

I didn't want to remove them from the site entirely as I think they provide some value, at least historically, but I needed a way to somehow mark them as "old". So, I've added class="old" to all the links in the navigation that I don't think provide a good example. These links will appear as grey, and have a title attribute describing why they are grey.

I plan to rewrite a number of the cooler old things and bring them up to date, so look for a several "version 2" releases in the coming weeks.

On an unrelated note, who's going to SXSW this year (next week!)? This is my first year attending, and I'm looking forward to it very much. I'm especially looking forward to meeting folks that visit here and the folks that run the sites I visit. Hope to see you there!

I am, but you knew that.

I'll be there, we should have some kind of JavaScript geek-together.
